Wide-Eyed Dolphin

I was just on the phone with my writing buddy Lauren (we write together almost every morning).  Halfway through our “good morning, how ya doing?” check in, I glanced out the window and saw my beloved dolphin pod come up for air.

I squealed, leapt from my chair and went to the window.  Lauren asked, “What are they saying to you?”  I replied tentatively, “There’s always hope?”

 Dolphin, Dolphin, Dolphin!

I focused near their first emergence to see the dolphin again.  I mused aloud it was odd to see them roll up only once.  Then I widened my gaze and saw them a good quarter mile from where I first sited them.

“Boy, they are really moving this morning,” I said, delighting in watching them jump as they rolled and played.  “They’re on the other side of the pier now!”

It’s all in the eyes of the beholder!

“What does that say to you?” asked Lauren.

“Look up and get out of your head. There’s a big world out there,” tumbled out of me.

“Hmm, I think that’s their real message!” said the wise Lauren.

Get moving already!

Here it is, January 11th and most people I’m talking with (my very smart clients and thoughtful friends) have returned their noses to the proverbial grindstone after Holiday downtime.

It’s easy to jump back into our routine of doing, doing and more doing.  It’s easy to get stuck in our heads with planning, plotting and calendaring.  It’s easy to lock into one spot or view in search of what we want.

Are you ready for your close-up?

To be sure, focus is good!  In fact, without clarity and focus, nothing much changes.  In fact, part of my job as a coach is supporting clients to get or stay focused on what they say they want.

Another part of my job as a coach is to take people to a big picture view or perspective.  So right now, let’s explore the power in being able to move from tele-photo to wide-angle when viewing life’s circumstances and our goals.

I invite you to spend time each day this month in the wide-angle lens place.  Start now – here’s how:

  1. Take a few deep breaths, relax back in your chair and close your eyes.
  2. Imagine you are in a wide-open nature setting – standing on the shore at the ocean, in an open meadow or on top of a mountain.  Take a few deep breaths in your nature location.
  3. Think about a goal or a circumstance that is causing you stress or worry.  Ask yourself, “What is possible for my (goal or circumstance) from this mountain top / ocean / open meadow?”  Let nature’s wide-angle wisdom flow into you.
  4. You can end it there with another deep breath, or continue the exploration by asking, “What does this wisdom inspire in me?”

So, from my dolphin pod, I say to you:  It’s a big world out there!  Get out of your head and look up!  When you do, what do you see?  What actions are you compelled to take now?

What happens when you consciously spend time going to a wide-angle view of your life?  Please share so we can learn from each other!

With love and light,

Cat
